New to Seattle and looking for your BJJ home?

This page is for you, so you can learn a bit more about us from the perspective of a person who already trains.

How We Train

Classes at Framework BJJ Seattle are jiu-jitsu practice from start to finish. No running, no burpees, no shrimping up and down the mat. Practice is dominated by live training, but that doesn’t mean we just slap, bump, and go. We employ a constraints-led approach, with plenty of room for each coach to share details and techniques from their personal experience.

Effective learning requires a good learning environment. Ours begins with a simple ethos: we practice to build skills, not to win rounds. That means that even though most of our training is live, it’s done in a cooperative stance – everyday sparring is a tool we use to get better at jiu-jitsu, not a contest. But that doesn’t mean we don’t love a healthy scrap between the right training partners!

All Purpose Jiu-Jitsu

Jiu-jitsu can be practiced for, and applied in, a wide variety of contexts. At Framework BJJ Seattle, we take a capacious approach that we feel can be made to fit sport, self-defense, or anything in between. We call this All Purpose Jiu-Jitsu.

We don’t train for self-defense, but we will help make you aware of how the things we practice do or don’t apply to self-defense scenarios. We don’t train for competition, but we have competitors, and we support their goals both culturally and materially.

We want everyone to feel more than welcome: we want you to feel that you can practice jiu-jitsu your way, and for your goals, while surrounded and supported by our community.

Low Hierarchy, Open Culture

Belts are markers on a personal journey, and indicators of experience, but rank absolutely does not come with privileges – everyone is equal on our mat. We strongly encourage peer-to-peer coaching, and we want all of our members to feel empowered to share their perspectives with training partners.

We place no limits on cross training – we value the things you learn by practicing at other places, and we respect your autonomy as a practitioner.

Free Trial Week

We offer a full free trial week, so that you can experience multiple classes and coaches, and get a sense for what day-to-day life in the gym feels like. If you’re interested, contact us here and we’ll get you on the mat!
